Shinhan Financial aims to plant 20,000 trees by 2028, steps up eco-friendly finance push

Shinhan Financial Group announced Friday that it held an employee volunteer event to mark World Environment Day.

About 40 employees took part in the activity on May 30 at "Shinhan SOL Bangul Forest" in Yonggak-ri, Iljik-myeon, Andong, North Gyeongsang Province.

After receiving on-site instruction on wildfire damage and the importance of forest restoration, participants spread fertilizer and removed weeds to support tree growth within the reforestation zone. They also planted flowering plants and built garden beds at a senior center in a nearby village affected by the wildfire.

Shinhan Financial is carrying out the "Shinhan SOL Bangul Forest" project, which aims to plant roughly 20,000 trees by 2028 at a wildfire-damaged site in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, in line with the government's national tree-planting policy. The group plans to expand the program to include new-employee orientation activities and family participation programs.

Shinhan Financial has been ramping up its group-wide push into eco-friendly finance this year. Shinhan Bank President Jeong Sang-hyeok visited an eco-friendly vehicle parts production facility earlier this year to discuss ways to provide productive financial support.

"Shinhan Financial is going beyond planting forests — we are continuing to nurture and care for them directly, contributing to wildfire recovery and community restoration," a Shinhan Financial official said. "We will keep working with our employees on a range of activities to address the climate crisis and preserve local ecosystems."
