Independent candidate Hwang Yi-ju won the Uljin-gun chief race in the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections, pledging to build "a new Uljin where justice and common sense live and breathe."

In his victory statement Thursday, Hwang said the win was not a personal triumph but "a great mandate from the people of the county to revive Uljin's struggling economy and usher in a new era — a victory of civic sovereignty."

He said he would carry the efforts of campaign workers and supporters who walked every alley alongside him "as a lifelong medal close to my heart," adding that he would repay their support through results in county governance.

Hwang also called for an end to the divisions and wounds that emerged during the campaign. "The time has come to put all the conflict, discord and hurt behind us," he said. "I will be a county chief of unity and harmony — moving forward as one Uljin, bridging every rift the election created and embracing every resident."

He said he would "realize a county government that earns trust through change and results that residents can feel," adding that he would devote all his energy to making Uljin a better, more livable place with his eyes fixed solely on the people.
