A 10-year-old boy riding a bicycle across a crosswalk in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, was struck and killed by a city bus Monday.

According to the Asan Police Station, the boy was crossing a crosswalk in Jangjae-ri, Baebang-eup, Asan, at around 2:55 p.m. Monday when a city bus hit him and ran over him.

Firefighters who responded to the scene performed CPR on the boy and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive.

Police believe the boy, while riding his bicycle near the crosswalk, collided with the side of the bus as it waited at a signal and fell to the ground. The bus driver, a man in his 60s identified only by his surname B, then drove forward without noticing the boy, police said.

Investigators found that the traffic signal at the crosswalk was not functioning at the time of the accident.

Police plan to review closed-circuit television footage from around the scene to determine the exact sequence of events.

"It has been confirmed that the bus driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time," a police official said. "We plan to book him on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act and investigate accordingly."
