The Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy said Lee Jae-sik, director general for power grid policy, conducted a surprise inspection Monday afternoon of the construction site and field office for Section 10 of the East Coast-Singapyeong transmission line project in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province.

The unannounced visit came after authorities confirmed sediment runoff had damaged forests and valley areas near the 500-kilovolt high-voltage direct current transmission line construction site, along with unauthorized clearing of forest land outside the permitted zone.

During the inspection, officials checked the restoration status at sites where sediment had spilled beyond the permitted zone. They also reviewed drainage improvements and slope stabilization measures put in place to prevent further runoff from reaching nearby residential areas during heavy rainfall.

Officials also assessed safety management conditions, given the high number of elevated work operations involved in transmission line construction.

"Given the sediment runoff concerns associated with the East Coast-Singapyeong transmission line project, we will ensure that reinforcement work and disaster preparedness are completed before the rainy season begins," Lee said.
