Following government pressure to stabilize prices, flour and sugar makers cut their prices, and bakery chains will lower bread and cake prices next month. [Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours]

Consumer prices in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province rose 3.1 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively, in May compared with the same month a year earlier, according to an analysis by the Ministry of Statistics' Honam Regional Data Office released Monday.

In Gwangju, agricultural and livestock prices were mixed: pork rose 9.1 percent and rice climbed 14 percent, while napa cabbage fell 26.2 percent and domestic beef dropped 3.1 percent.

Among industrial products, gasoline surged 23.6 percent and diesel 34.2 percent, while sanitary pads fell 10 percent and rice cakes declined 6.7 percent.

In utilities, tap water charges rose 7.7 percent and city gas edged up 0.5 percent, while electricity rates fell 0.4 percent.

In South Jeolla Province, agricultural and livestock prices were led higher by pork, up 9.8 percent, and domestic beef, up 8 percent.
