Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo criticized a rival politician Sunday, saying it was "nonsense, no matter how you look at it, for someone who destroyed the conservative camp twice to be calling for its rebuilding."

Hong made the remarks through his social media account Sunday, asking, "How stupid do they think the people are, trying to deceive them with talk like that?"

The comments appeared directed at Han Dong-hoon, an independent candidate running in the by-election for the National Assembly seat in Busan's Buk-gu A district under the banner of "rebuilding conservatism."

"The clan-owned media outlets that blindly follow along are no different," Hong added.

Hong also turned his attention to the Pyeongtaek B district race, saying, "The same goes for Pyeongtaek — dazzling the public with a torrent of empty words." He said it was a sign of the times that "someone who once mocked the people as 'gabungae' — crawfish, crucian carp and frogs — is out there making noise in an election." The remarks appeared directed at Cho Kuk, the Rebuilding Korea Party candidate running in the Pyeongtaek B by-election.

"No matter how murky the election gets, I trust the people," Hong added. "I believe their collective wisdom will deliver the verdict."
