Second-highest vehicle registration count among Seoul districts — free classes for self-driving residents
Summer curriculum covers engine overheating, fire risk, engine room inspection, oil checks and emergency response
Songpa-gu in Seoul will run a free "Auto Maintenance Class" over two days starting June 12, giving drivers the skills to inspect their own vehicles and sharpen their safe-driving habits ahead of the peak summer vacation season.
According to fire department statistics, vehicle fires tend to cluster in July and August as temperatures spike. Mechanical failures — particularly engine and cooling system malfunctions, engine overheating and oil leaks — are among the leading causes.
Songpa-gu has the second-highest number of registered vehicles among Seoul's autonomous districts. In response, the district has partnered annually with the Songpa-gu chapter of the Seoul Special Metropolitan City Automobile Specialized Maintenance Business Association to offer the classes. Demand has been strong enough that enrollment fills on a first-come, first-served basis and closes early every year.
The program is divided into a theory session and a hands-on practical session.
The theory session runs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on June 12 at the association's Songpa-gu chapter training hall, covering basic vehicle mechanics, general maintenance tips, fuel-efficient driving techniques and road safety rules.
The practical session follows on June 13 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Jamsil Retention Basin parking lot, where participants will learn firsthand how key engine room components work, how to check various fluids and oils, and what to do in roadside emergencies. The outdoor session may be canceled in the event of rain.
The curriculum focuses particularly on self-inspection techniques that drivers can apply in everyday life, with the aim of improving vehicle upkeep and preventing accidents.
The classes are free and open to any self-driving resident of Songpa-gu. Each session accepts up to 50 participants on a first-come, first-served basis, and registration closes June 11. Enrollment may end earlier once capacity is reached.
