Kim Sung-nyeon, a former Daegu Suseong-gu council member representing the Ra electoral district — covering Gosan 1, 2 and 3-dong — is drawing attention for his bid to become the first progressive district council member in Daegu to win four consecutive terms.

Running as a Justice Party candidate, Kim expressed strong confidence Sunday, two days before the June 3 local elections. "Building on the progress we have made together with residents, I will again seek their support to create an even better Suseong-gu," he said.

Kim first won election in 2010 under the banner of the Progressive New Party, then secured consecutive victories in the 2014 and 2018 elections to serve three terms on the district council.

That a progressive politician has repeatedly won the support of local residents in Daegu — a city with a strong conservative base — is widely seen as a testament to the diversity of local politics.

During his three terms, Kim focused on resolving issues closely tied to residents' daily lives and pursued a range of policies aimed at community development, earning recognition for his work on education, welfare, transportation and urban environmental improvements.

Should he win, Kim would set a record as the first democratic-progressive politician to serve four terms on a district council in Daegu.

His key campaign pledges include building a second Gosan public library, launching a morning meal program called "A Morning Meal in Siji — Breakfast for 1,000 Won," establishing a public bicycle sharing system in Siji, and setting up a public postpartum care center in Siji.

"Running for a fourth term is not a personal political goal — it is a process of completing the change and innovation we began together with residents," Kim said. "Based on the trust residents have placed in me, I will communicate with them with an even more humble attitude and do my utmost for the development of our community."

He added that "politics is the closest form of public service for changing people's lives," and pledged to "cherish the voice of every single resident and devote all my energy to making Suseong-gu a great place to live and a district with a promising future."
