A woman who mailed false allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor to her ex-boyfriend's workplace after their breakup has received a suspended prison sentence.
Judge Lee Jun-gu of Seoul Eastern District Court's Criminal Division 7 sentenced Kim, 37, to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered two years of probation on May 12. Kim had been indicted on defamation charges.
Kim and the victim, identified as A, 39, dated from 2021 to 2023. After the relationship ended, Kim was charged with mailing certified letters containing false claims to two of A's supervisors in February last year.
The letters alleged that A had engaged in coercive sexual relations with a minor without the minor's parents' knowledge, that A had repeatedly paid for sex, and that A possessed and distributed illegally recorded sexual footage of Kim.
All of Kim's claims were false.
"A appears to have suffered considerable psychological distress as a result of Kim's actions and has petitioned for a severe sentence, indicating the gravity of the offense is not light," the court said in explaining the sentence. It added, however, that it had taken into account that Kim admitted to all charges and showed remorse, and had no prior criminal record.
