Focused hygiene checks target kimbap and raw fish eateries and delivery-only restaurants, alongside tailored prevention consulting and self-inspection checklists
[The Herald Business=Park Jong-il, senior reporter] Seoul's Eunpyeong-gu is rolling out an intensive food poisoning prevention campaign targeting local food service establishments and institutional cafeterias, as the hot and humid summer climate raises the risk of foodborne illness.
The initiative aims to build a safer food environment through proactive hygiene management.
Key measures include strengthening hygiene inspections, producing and distributing self-inspection checklists, offering food poisoning prevention consulting, and running a public awareness campaign.
Inspectors will focus on ingredient storage conditions, refrigeration and freezer temperature maintenance, kitchen sanitation, personal hygiene among food handlers, and the use of products past their expiration dates at food service establishments and institutional cafeterias. Kimbap and raw fish eateries and delivery-only restaurants — venues considered particularly high-risk for food poisoning — will receive intensive on-site guidance and inspections.
In addition, the district plans to produce and distribute food poisoning prevention self-inspection checklists to encourage business owners to manage hygiene on their own initiative. It will also run tailored prevention consulting for hygiene-vulnerable establishments, diagnosing sanitation conditions at each stage — from ingredient intake and storage through cooking and serving — and recommending improvements suited to each venue's circumstances.
The district will also conduct a public awareness campaign promoting food poisoning prevention practices among residents, covering handwashing, proper storage temperatures, using separate knives and cutting boards, thorough cooking, and cleaning and disinfection.
