Jungnang-gu received 820 kilograms of rice — 82 bags of 10 kilograms each — from newlyweds Kim Jeong-min and Lee Hyeon-min on May 29, to be distributed to low-income and vulnerable residents in the district.
The couple chose to share their joy with neighbors rather than accept floral arrangements, leaving a warm impression on the local community.
The donation came about as the couple prepared for their wedding and decided to ask guests for rice instead of flowers, which are typically discarded after a single use. Guests who embraced the idea contributed enough to fill 82 bags, totaling 820 kilograms.
"We wanted to make the most special day of our lives even more meaningful, which is why we chose to donate rice instead of receiving flowers," the couple said. "We hope the warm wishes everyone brought will offer a small measure of strength and comfort to neighbors in need."
The district plans to distribute the rice through neighborhood community centers to households in welfare blind spots — including families in crisis, elderly people living alone, and single-parent households.
A district official thanked the couple for "sharing the start of their new life with their neighbors and putting the spirit of giving into practice," adding that the district hopes the donation will help spread a culture of sharing throughout the community. "We will make sure the rice reaches the households that need it most," the official said.
