The henley neck: this fall's must-have staple
The henley-neck T-shirt — a collarless top with a short button placket at the neckline — has emerged as one of the defining items of the fall and winter season this year.
The style takes its name from Henley-on-Thames, a town in England where rowers wore similar uniforms in the late 19th century. The defining feature is a round neckline fitted with two or three buttons.
The button detail gives the top a subtle focal point even when worn alone, and the style lends itself equally well to layering or as an inner piece beneath a jacket. Its versatility — pairing cleanly with virtually any bottom — makes it an easy way to achieve a polished, understated look.
'I have 10 at home, one in every color' — Swings and his henley obsession
Much of the current henley-neck buzz in South Korea traces back to rapper Swings, who has been spotted repeatedly wearing a Uniqlo henley-neck T-shirt since last year, drawing steady attention from fans.
Swings has appeared in the shirt in a wide range of settings — from casual photos with friends to a video response addressing a diss track released against him by fellow rapper Big Naughty, as well as live streams with fans and a content video filmed with singer DinDin.
The specific item is the Uniqlo Waffle Henley-Neck T-Shirt. Its waffle-knit fabric adds subtle texture and a naturally flattering silhouette. The shirt comes in eight sizes from XS to 4XL and is priced at 29,900 won ($22).
Swings explained his choice simply. "I gained weight and thought I'd wear something cheap but as nice-looking as possible until I slimmed down," he said. "I told myself I'd just rotate one outfit — and that was already a year ago." He added: "I have 10 at home. One in every color."
The comments resonated across hip-hop and fashion communities online. "Smart move — the designer versions that cost hundreds of thousands of won don't even look that much better," one user wrote. Another said: "I bought 10 and now I just cycle through the colors every day." Demand surged to the point where the shirt sold out online.
International fashion press takes notice: 'the cool-girl basic of fall'
The henley-neck T-shirt has been gaining traction in global fashion circles as well, with major American fashion publications singling it out as the go-to replacement for the plain white tee this fall and winter.
Who What Wear highlighted the henley neck as an essential fall item poised to replace the basic white T-shirt, noting that pairing it with a favorite pair of jeans, slacks or denim shorts is enough to pull together a polished look.
InStyle called the henley neck a cool-girl staple for the fall and winter season, describing it as "a practical layering piece that goes with almost everything."
Harper's Bazaar also named it one of fall's must-haves, calling it "a basic that feels slightly more refined than a T-shirt while being just as versatile."
High-end brands have followed suit. Saint Laurent released a henley top with lace trim on the sleeves, while Chloé offered one with contrasting trim on the front. Miu Miu also joined the trend with a cotton henley T-shirt of its own.
Effortlessly stylish: tips for wearing the henley neck
Simple as it is, the henley-neck T-shirt can project quiet sophistication depending on how it is styled.
Fastening all the buttons gives a neat, classic look, while leaving one or two undone at the top elongates the neckline and creates a relaxed, effortlessly cool effect.
The style also works well for layering. Letting a sleeveless top in a tonal color peek out from beneath an open-buttoned henley adds dimension and visual interest.
Unlike a plain round neck, the button placket means the henley never looks flat when worn under an outer layer — whether a leather jacket, a tailored blazer or a cardigan.
To make the most of the henley's distinctive buttons and silhouette, avoid an overly loose fit. A cut that follows the body's natural lines brings out the style's characteristic, understated shape to best effect.
