Pohang City Council in North Gyeongsang Province appointed two legal advisers Thursday at the speaker's office to provide legal counsel and support professional legislative activities.
The appointments came after the terms of the previous legal advisers expired. Under the council's ordinance on legislative and legal adviser operations, attorney Lee Jeong-hwan was reappointed and attorney Oh Jae-min was newly appointed.
The legal advisers will serve two-year terms, during which they will advise on the interpretation of laws and local regulations related to the council, handle litigation involving the council, and advise on other legal matters delegated by the speaker.
They will also support legal review of ordinance bills proposed by lawmakers during the legislative process, helping ensure that the council's legislative and other activities comply with applicable laws.
"As the scope of lawmakers' activities has expanded to meet the complex and diverse administrative needs of citizens, the role of legal advisers has become increasingly important," Council Speaker Kim Cheol-su said. "We ask for your active counsel and support so that we can enhance the expertise and credibility of our legislative work, drawing on your extensive legal knowledge."
