Hangul cookbook 'Eumsik dimibang' earns inscription
Records of civilian solidarity in overcoming the wounds of a national disaster, and a tradition of Korean culinary knowledge spanning more than 130 years, have together received UNESCO recognition. The two heritage items, identified through a public nomination drive in 2024, have demonstrated their distinct historical value internationally — one as a testament to community healing, the other as a preservation of a unique food culture.
The Cultural Heritage Administration said Thursday that the "Danwon High School 4.16 Archive" and "Suunjapbang and Eumsik dimibang" were officially inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register after passing review at the 11th general assembly of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific, held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The inscription brings South Korea's total UNESCO Memory of the World holdings to 28.
The "Danwon High School 4.16 Archive" comprises 235,220 items documenting the everyday lives of students from Danwon High School who died in the 2014 Sewol ferry sinking, along with records of public mourning and the recovery efforts of bereaved families and survivors. The archive was recognized for the way the documentation process itself embodies the healing of pain and trauma in the aftermath of disaster.
"Suunjapbang and Eumsik dimibang" are records of traditional culinary knowledge from the Korean Peninsula. Suunjapbang was recognized as the earliest privately authored cookbook from the region, while Eumsik dimibang was valued as the oldest surviving complete hangul cookbook.
Earlier, the Cultural Heritage Administration gathered expert opinions and input from the Korean Committee for the Memory of the World on nominations submitted through a public call held from Oct. 14 to Dec. 20, 2024. It then decided to apply for inscription of the "Danwon High School 4.16 Archive" and "Suunjapbang and Eumsik dimibang" on the Asia-Pacific Regional Register and submitted the applications to UNESCO in September 2025.
"We plan to continue identifying documentary heritage and expanding UNESCO Memory of the World inscriptions to promote Korea's documentary culture at home and abroad," the Cultural Heritage Administration said.
