Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Kyo-heung, who represents Incheon's Seo-gu A district in the National Assembly, has been appointed to the budget adjustment subcommittee of the Assembly's Special Committee on Budget and Accounts, which will make the final decisions on cuts and increases to the 820 trillion won ($612 billion) government budget proposal for 2027.
Kim announced Thursday that he had been named to the subcommittee, which is set to begin full operation Nov. 16.
The budget subcommittee serves as the Assembly's primary venue for finalizing the government's spending plan after it has cleared preliminary reviews by standing committees.
The 2027 government budget proposal before the subcommittee totals 820.9 trillion won, a 12.8 percent increase from the previous year.
Kim also sits on the Health and Welfare Committee and the full budget committee. He said he plans to rigorously scrutinize the justification for major policy funding as he joins the subcommittee.
Kim said he will focus particularly on securing funding for a wider metropolitan transit network to ease traffic congestion in the northwestern Greater Seoul area and on resolving long-standing local issues.
"The national budget is the core resource for restoring people's livelihoods and filling gaps in the welfare safety net," Kim said. "I will do my utmost in the review process to ensure that Incheon's long-standing priorities and key issues are reflected in the government budget proposal in a timely manner."
