Uiseong-gun in North Gyeongsang Province and its county assembly have joined forces to attract a correctional facility, launching a full-scale push to secure a candidate site.

The county and the Uiseong-gun County Assembly held a rally Friday at the assembly's main chamber, immediately after the closing ceremony of the 294th extraordinary session.

The rally followed the assembly's unanimous passage of a motion endorsing the correctional facility bid, with all 13 sitting members voting in favor. At the event, the county governor, the assembly speaker and other attendees chanted "Bring the correctional facility to Uiseong," reaffirming their commitment to the campaign.

Efforts to build public consensus are also gaining momentum.

Uiseong-gun held a briefing for provincial and county lawmakers and civic group leaders on Oct. 8, followed by community meetings in Geumseong-myeon on Oct. 13 and in Uiseong-eup on Oct. 16. Geumseong-myeon has already secured the consent of 80.2 percent of households, while Uiseong-eup plans to obtain consent by December.

Ten related institutions, including the Uiseong Branch of the Daegu District Court, have also submitted letters of consent.

Uiseong-gun plans to submit a formal bid proposal Wednesday, then focus all efforts on winning the candidate-site designation scheduled for December by responding to the Ministry of Justice's quantitative evaluation and on-site inspection.

County Governor Choe Yu-cheol said the county, the assembly and residents had united with one heart and one purpose, vowing to "turn Uiseong from a county in crisis into a county of opportunity" by securing the facility.

Assembly Speaker Ji Mu-jin said the assembly would work closely with the county administration and fulfill its role to the end so that "the earnest wishes of our residents can bear fruit."
