Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power won the AI Innovation Award at the 2026 Public Institution AI Innovation Achievement Competition, held Wednesday at Nurigum Square in Seoul's Sangam-dong.
The competition was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the National Information Society Agency (NIA), with the aim of identifying and spreading best practices in AI use among public institutions.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power received high marks for its entry in the "outstanding AI use case" category — a project titled "Achieving Breakthrough Nuclear Power through the Development of Hy-NuRI."
Hy-NuRI is a generative AI system built specifically for Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, drawing on vast specialized data from the nuclear power generation sector. The system was developed and is being operated to improve work efficiency while strengthening the safety of nuclear power plant operations.
The company said it plans to continue expanding its use of AI to contribute to nuclear power safety and stable electricity supply, while also working to deliver public service innovations that citizens can tangibly feel.
"AI is the core driver that will transform the paradigm of the nuclear industry," said Lee Gwang-hun, head of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Quality and Technology Division. "Through nuclear power-specialized AI, we will raise operational safety to the world's highest level and build a clean, safe energy environment that the public can trust."
