Automaker pledges to uphold UNGC's 10 principles, embed SDGs in strategy
BYD adopts 'DREAMS' sustainability framework built on 6 pillars
Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD announced Wednesday that it has officially joined the UN Global Compact. The company pledged to uphold the UNGC's 10 principles and incorporate the UN Sustainable Development Goals into its management strategy and operations.
Founded in 2000, the UNGC is an international organization that supports corporate sustainability. It helps companies implement the 10 principles in their operations and strategy, and encourages participation in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. More than 25,000 companies from over 160 countries are currently members.
BYD operates in more than 100 countries and regions under the vision of "cooling the Earth by 1 degree Celsius." The company said it became the first automaker in the world to halt production of pure internal-combustion-engine vehicles in 2022. It has also set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2045.
In 2025, BYD unveiled its "DREAMS" sustainability strategy, built around six pillars: decarbonization, revolution, equity, alliance, moral integrity and shared value.
BYD said it delivered about 4.6 million eco-friendly vehicles in 2025, reducing carbon emissions by 46.6 million tons — equivalent to planting about 776 million trees. In the area of social value creation, the company has established a charitable fund worth 3 billion yuan ($450 million) to support educational development, including university scholarships and the spread of electric vehicle technology.
"Joining the UN Global Compact marks a very important milestone in BYD's sustainability journey," a company official said. "We will continue to strictly adhere to the UNGC's principles and requirements, fulfill our corporate social responsibilities, and work with our value chain partners to strengthen responsible business practices and lead efforts toward achieving the global SDGs."
Meanwhile, BYD recently announced plans to build a flash-charging network in Indonesia and launched the new Denza D9 and Z9GT, both equipped with second-generation Blade batteries.
BYD Indonesia plans to first install flash chargers at 10 Denza showrooms for consumers to experience, then gradually expand to a broader public charging network starting at the end of the year.
