Bacchus, Dong-A Pharmaceutical's flagship energy-recovery drink brand, is carving out a firm position in mainstream retail channels — convenience stores and health-and-beauty stores — as it builds a stable new growth engine beyond its traditional pharmacy base.

While the pharmacy network continues to underpin the brand's credibility and financial foundation, a range of derivative products tailored to mass-market retail has drawn in large numbers of younger consumers in their teens through their 30s, broadening the brand's reach considerably.

According to Dong-A Pharmaceutical's third-quarter 2026 earnings release on Wednesday, total third-quarter sales for the Bacchus business — measured on a pre-merger operating-company basis before the Oct. 1 merger — came to 88.8 billion won ($67.1 million), up 2.5 percent from 86.7 billion won in the same period a year earlier.

The growth rate moderated somewhat in the third quarter due to a high base effect — first-half cumulative sales had risen 19.7 percent year on year to 148.4 billion won — as well as seasonal factors, though underlying demand for the brand remained solid.

The standout performer in this quarter's results was the non-Bacchus F product lineup — which includes Eol Baksa and Bacchus jelly, sold primarily through hypermarkets and convenience stores. That segment posted third-quarter sales of 60.4 billion won, up 24.3 percent from 48.6 billion won a year earlier.

On a cumulative January-through-September basis, the same lineup reached 153 billion won, a sharp 41.6 percent increase from 108.1 billion won in the year-earlier period. Meanwhile, Bacchus D — the traditional pharmacy-focused flagship — contributed 43.4 billion won in third-quarter sales, up 1.0 percent year on year, continuing to serve as a steady foundation for the overall business.

The product driving the successful entry into mainstream retail is Eol Baksa, an energy drink that Dong-A Pharmaceutical commercialized after spotting a "modisumer" trend — consumers mixing ice, cider and Bacchus themselves at convenience stores.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical packaged the cumbersome DIY process — buying an ice cup, cider and Bacchus separately at a convenience store — into a single ready-to-drink can. The company also priced it up to 32 percent cheaper than the homemade version, helping it embed itself in the daily routines of young convenience-store shoppers.

Containing 1,500 milligrams of taurine and three B vitamins, Eol Baksa shot to the top of the convenience-store beverage category immediately after launch and surpassed 35 million cans sold within its first year. Eol Baksa Zero, a sugar-free, low-calorie (10 kcal) variant introduced in March, rode the "healthy pleasure" wave to sell more than 6 million cans in just three months. The Eol Baksa lineup alone has now accumulated sales of more than 41 million cans, cementing its dominance in the energy drink market.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical is also accelerating its push into new retail channels. The company recently launched Bacchus O, a high-concentration energy shot, and brought it into CJ Olive Young, the country's largest health-and-beauty chain. Formulated with 1,000 milligrams of taurine, high-dose B vitamins, theanine and glycine, Bacchus O is positioned as a "performance maker" — targeting working professionals and students in their 20s and 30s who need focus and energy before an important exam, a demanding workday or a workout. The move extends the brand's retail footprint from pharmacies and convenience stores into the beauty-and-wellness platform space.

Age-targeted marketing has also supported the brand's retail expansion. Dong-A Pharmaceutical has organized its portfolio around distinct consumer segments: Bak Mat Jelly (Bacchus-flavored gummy candy) for teenagers, Eol Baksa and Bacchus O for consumers in their 20s and 30s, and the original Bacchus for middle-aged and older consumers who have long trusted the brand. The company has backed this lineup with celebrity endorsers spanning Yunho of TVXQ, Minho of SHINee, and Eunseok and Wonbin of Riize, and released a performance-style advertisement featuring a remake of Deux's signature song "Woori-neun" to deepen its emotional connection with younger audiences.

The strong performance of the Bacchus retail lineup carries significance beyond simple beverage sales growth — it matters for portfolio diversification as well. With Dong-A Socio having absorbed its subsidiary Dong-A Pharmaceutical on Oct. 1 to relaunch as an operating holding company, the robust cash-generating power of the Bacchus retail product range is expected to become an increasingly important engine for funding drug development and future business investment under the new structure.

"Bacchus is expanding its brand territory and broadening consumer touchpoints by introducing new lineups such as Eol Baksa and Bacchus O," a Dong-A Pharmaceutical official said. "We plan to strengthen the competitiveness of the Bacchus brand through a diverse product range and continue offering consumers new experiences."
