Seoul's Guro-gu announced Tuesday that it has been newly designated a women-friendly city under the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family's 2026 Women-Friendly City certification review.

The ministry grants the designation based on a comprehensive assessment of a local government's gender equality policy framework, women's economic and social participation, community safety, and care environments. Guro-gu has pursued a range of policies centered on five goals: building a foundation for gender equality policy, expanding women's economic and social participation, improving community safety, creating a family-friendly care environment, and strengthening community engagement capacity.

This year, the district launched its inaugural "Women-Friendly City Supporters" group in January, comprising 32 residents, to let community members directly identify local issues and participate in policy improvement.

Alongside this, the district established public-private cooperation bodies in key areas, including a women's employment council and a safety working group, and supported women's economic participation through job placement assistance for career-returning women and the operation of women's employment classes. It also ran a citizen monitoring team to prevent illegal filming, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance community safety.

Building on the designation, the district plans to expand community-oriented projects — including support for women's employment and entrepreneurship, safer late-night commuting environments, and a stronger local care network — while continuing its public-private partnership framework with residents and relevant agencies.

A designation ceremony will be held at the Seoul Women and Family Foundation on Dec. 2.

"This designation as a women-friendly city is a meaningful achievement made possible through the collective efforts of our residents and community," District Mayor Jang In-hong said. "We will continue to expand opportunities for women's social participation and build a safe, convenient care environment so that Guro becomes a better place to live for all residents."
