At a time when festivals are notorious for inflated prices, one event in Hongcheon-gun is taking the opposite approach.
Hongcheon-gun announced Monday that it will offer locally grown apples at significantly below-market prices during the 11th Hongcheon Apple Festival, running Nov. 6-8.
The festival will be held at Tori Forest in the urban woodland park in Hongcheon-eup, featuring apple variety exhibitions alongside a range of promotional and hands-on booths to give visitors plenty to see and do.
A special festival-only discount will apply throughout the event, with prices set 5,000 won below regular retail levels.
Fuji and Shinano Gold apples will be sold by variety and size, ranging from 30,000 won ($23) to 70,000 won per 5 kilograms, while Gamhong apples will be priced between 35,000 won and 75,000 won for the same weight.
In addition, 2-kilogram bags of apples will be available for 10,000 won regardless of variety. The discounts apply only during the three days of the festival.
Hongcheon-gun said it hopes the discounted sales will raise consumer awareness of Hongcheon apples, boost demand for locally grown fruit and increase income for area farmers.
Yun Seon-hwa, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said the special discount was designed to offer tangible benefits to festival-goers. "We hope many people will take this opportunity to buy Hongcheon apples at an affordable price and enjoy everything the festival has to offer," she said.
