CMG Pharmaceutical, a Chabiotech affiliate, is teaming up with a major veterinary hospital network to develop customized pet health products using colostrum exosome technology.

CMG Pharmaceutical announced Wednesday that it had signed an MOU with SKY Animal Medical Center to jointly develop pet health products and pursue broader business cooperation.

Under the agreement, the two sides will co-develop nutritional supplements for liver, pancreas and kidney health by combining colostrum exosomes with functional ingredients. CMG Pharmaceutical will handle raw material and finished-product production as well as regulatory approvals, while SKY Animal Medical Center will advise on formulation ratios based on its clinical experience and take charge of marketing and retail distribution.

The key ingredient, colostrum exosomes, is a functional material developed by Cha Medical Research Institute (CHARI) of Cha Hospital and Cha Bio Group using extracellular vesicle (EV) isolation and purification technology. CMG Pharmaceutical recently obtained regulatory approval for the ingredient and has built its own isolation and purification facility.

Through the partnership, CMG Pharmaceutical plans to expand the veterinary-exclusive lineup of its pet healthcare brand "Chaoreum" and strengthen its professional portfolio.

The company intends to improve prescription accessibility through SKY Animal Medical Center's specialist distribution network, which spans major locations nationwide — including Incheon, Suwon and Cheonan — since the center opened its first branch in Bucheon in 2011.

The collaboration is CMG Pharmaceutical's effort to transfer its advanced platform ingredient technology, originally developed for human pharmaceuticals and biotech, into the fast-growing pet healthcare market. The company aims to secure both product credibility and a foothold in the prescription market by linking clinical advice from large veterinary hospital staff and in-hospital distribution channels from the planning stage.

"This is an attempt to combine our pharmaceutical and biotech research and development capabilities with the expertise of medical professionals in the field, in step with the growth of the pet market," CMG Pharmaceutical CEO Lee Ju-hyung said. "Building on our collaboration on treatments for intractable diseases, we will extend our reach into health management products to strengthen our competitiveness in pet healthcare."

SKY Animal Medical Center CEO Oh I-se said the partnership builds on ongoing joint research into treatments for intractable diseases by bringing together clinical experience and research and development capabilities. "We hope to contribute to improving the health and welfare of companion animals," he added.
