The Seoul Metropolitan Government has given major downtown plazas a seasonal refresh, planting autumn flowers and trees at Seoul Plaza in Jung-gu, Gwanghwamun Square in Jongno-gu and the surrounding Sejong-daero area near Gwanghwamun, the city announced Saturday.
The city planted 18,480 flowers and trees spanning 61 varieties, including 5,060 chrysanthemum plants across seven cultivars such as Cushion Mum and Hanarum Ball. Each location was landscaped to complement its surroundings and character.
At the circular flower bed in Seoul Plaza, the city planted winterberry shrubs bearing red berries and pampas grass, alongside autumn chrysanthemums, small asters, boneset and oxeye daisies.
Around the main exits of City Hall Station and Gwanghwamun Station, as well as the green spaces at Cheonggyecheon Square and the area around Seoul Library, the city used autumn foliage plants, chrysanthemums and pampas grass to create seasonal scenery.
At Youllin Songhyeon Green Square in Jongno-gu, the city created a garden of zinnias and cosmos, sowing approximately 53 kilograms of zinnia seeds and 127 kilograms of cosmos seeds.
The square is also hosting the 3rd Seoul Sculpture Festival. Through Nov. 30, visitors can view 36 outdoor sculptures free of charge — 15 prize-winning works from the Seoul Sculpture competition and 21 pieces invited by the artistic director.
"We hope citizens and tourists will enjoy a moment of everyday relaxation and experience the autumn charm of Seoul at the city's major downtown plazas, now dressed in the colors of fall," said Kim Young-hwan, director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Garden City Bureau.
