Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power said Tuesday it has completed Tajikistan's first megawatt-scale solar power plant as part of the South Korean government's Official Development Assistance program.

The ODA project, led by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, targeted the Sughd and Gorno-Badakhshan regions of Tajikistan, which have long suffered from power shortages. Under the initiative, a 3 MW solar power facility and a 0.5 megawatt-hour ESS were installed in each region.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power said this marks the first time a megawatt-scale solar facility has been built in Tajikistan, adding that living conditions for residents in the affected areas are expected to improve significantly.

The company said the project also lays the groundwork for expanding renewable energy supply in the country. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power supported the project drawing on technical expertise and project management capabilities built up through domestic and overseas power generation ventures.

Korean-made equipment, including solar modules, was used on-site. Performance and operational data gathered during the facility's operation will be used to strengthen the capabilities of domestic companies and support their entry into overseas markets.

The company also plans to identify follow-on projects by leveraging its cooperative network with the local government and energy agencies.

Gong Yeong-gon, head of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's hydrogen convergence division, said the project "is meaningful in that it contributed to improving local power supply conditions while at the same time strengthening the foundation for energy cooperation between South Korea and Tajikistan." He added that the company would "continue to identify follow-on projects in solar and hydropower and expand new business opportunities across Central Asia, building on the experience and cooperative networks accumulated through this project."
