Samsung Electronics has unveiled the Galaxy Buds On, its first clip-type earphones.

The device marks a departure from the existing Galaxy Buds lineup by adopting a clip-style form factor, while also incorporating enhanced sound and AI features. Samsung Electronics said the product was "designed so users can comfortably enjoy audio without blocking their ears."

At a press briefing held Tuesday at its Taepyeongno Building in Jung-gu, Seoul, Samsung Electronics announced the Galaxy Buds On will officially launch Oct. 27. The earphones are priced at 299,000 won ($223) and will be available in a single black color.

The Galaxy Buds On's key features include a data-driven ergonomic design for an optimal fit, rich audio quality and call performance, and a range of hands-free functions including AI agent activation.

The most notable change is the clip-type form factor. Unlike conventional in-ear designs, clip-type earphones rest around the outer ear without sealing the ear canal. Accommodating the wide variation in ear shapes across users was a central design challenge.

Samsung Electronics turned to data for a solution, employing 4D computing-based AI optimization technology to achieve the ergonomic design.

Samsung also reviewed the structure and placement of internal components — including the battery, speakers and wiring — to optimize the design. Particular attention was paid to evenly distributing contact area and pressure on the parts that touch the ear. A shape-memory alloy band that flexes to conform to individual ear shapes delivers a consistently comfortable fit across users.

Despite the open-ear design, the Galaxy Buds On maintains rich sound and clear call quality. Clip-type earphones sit farther from the eardrum than conventional in-ear models, which typically makes bass reproduction more challenging.

To address this, Samsung equipped the Galaxy Buds On with a Twin Boost Speaker — a configuration pairing two identical woofer speakers to deliver stronger bass response.

An automatic volume adjustment feature adapts output to the surrounding environment by monitoring ambient noise levels in real time. The volume rises in steps as noise increases and automatically returns to its previous level when the noise subsides.

Sound leakage — a common issue with clip-type designs — is addressed through a leakage reduction technology applied to the Galaxy Buds series for the first time.

Call quality also received attention. The Galaxy Buds On carries over the Intelligent Clear Call technology found in previous Galaxy Buds models, which precisely separates the user's voice from background noise during calls to deliver a clearer sound to the other party.

In addition, when paired with an AI-supported smartphone or tablet, the Galaxy Buds On enables a range of hands-free functions through the earphones alone.

The AI voice feature is activated with the phrase "Hey Google, let's talk Live." This immediately launches Gemini Live, allowing users to carry on a conversation with the AI agent without any additional prompts.

A head gesture feature has also been added. When a call comes in while the user's hands are occupied, nodding accepts the call, while shaking the head dismisses an alarm or checks message notifications.

However, alarm dismissal and message notification checks require One UI 9.0 or later. Alarm dismissal is limited to the Samsung Clock, Reminder and Calendar apps, while notification checks are available only for apps that have been granted notification access on Galaxy Buds.
