Drivers will soon receive real-time road condition alerts powered by LiDAR sensor-based intelligent road information technology.

The system detects road damage such as potholes while a vehicle is in motion and notifies the driver instantly. LiDAR analyzes the three-dimensional surface of the road to identify potholes and measure their depth and area, then delivers that data — including location and damage scale — alongside on-site imagery.

Vuurn Technology, a developer of LiDAR-based autonomous driving and spatial recognition solutions, signed an MOU with KT Corp on Monday to pursue the initiative.

The intelligent road management solution will combine Vuurn's three-dimensional spatial recognition technology with KT Corp's precision positioning and communications and cloud infrastructure. The two companies plan to verify the technology's completeness and real-world applicability through joint pilot testing, then move toward standardizing the solution and identifying opportunities in the local government and public infrastructure markets.

Vuurn will draw on its autonomous driving solution, Copilot, applying LiDAR recognition technology to road damage detection and building a platform that uses the collected data for road maintenance and management.

LiDAR's three-dimensional measurement sets it apart from conventional camera-based detection. Cameras rely primarily on visual information — color and contrast in images — to identify damage. LiDAR, by contrast, fires lasers to measure the distance to the road surface and generates three-dimensional shape data, enabling it to quantify not only the presence of a pothole but also its depth and area.

"We are applying LiDAR-based recognition technology from the autonomous driving field to road safety management," Vuurn CEO Kim Jae-kwang said. "Combined with KT Corp's precision positioning and communications infrastructure, this opens up new business opportunities."

KT Corp said it would work with Vuurn to identify business opportunities through collaboration and standardized packaging in road safety management, including pothole detection, and create new value together.
