Police have arrested two men in their 20s who smashed an ATM installed in a secluded location and fled with the cash inside.
The Gimhae Jungbu Police Station in South Gyeongsang Province said Monday it had detained two men in their 20s, identified only as A, on charges including theft after they smashed an ATM installed outside a convenience store late at night and fled with the money.
The pair are accused of using a tool they had prepared in advance to smash an ATM outside a convenience store in Gimhae at around 9:40 p.m. on Sept. 29, stealing 5.7 million won ($4,250) in cash before fleeing.
The suspects targeted the convenience store because it had closed for the night and foot traffic in the area was sparse, leaving little chance of being spotted.
Police reviewed nearby CCTV footage and arrested the two men in succession. Investigators found that the suspects had spent most of the stolen money on entertainment.
