Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun attended the 33rd Mapo Citizens' Day ceremony Sunday afternoon at the main auditorium of the Mapo-gu Office, presenting Citizens' Awards to residents who have contributed to the district's development.
Held on the final day of the 19th Mapo Naru Saeujeot (salted shrimp) Festival, the ceremony honored the efforts of residents who have helped shape Mapo and strengthened community bonds. A visiting delegation from the district's sister city, Gochang-gun in North Jeolla Province, also attended to offer congratulations.
Yoo presented plaques to seven recipients of the 35th Mapo-gu Citizens' Award, recognizing individuals who have served as role models in their respective fields, and joined them for a commemorative photo.
The recipients were Song Gi-sik, director of the Haeoeum Arts Troupe, for culture; Yoon Chung-hyeon, chairman of the Mapo-gu Volleyball Association, for sports; Park Do-hee, head of the cleaning staff at the Mapo Cultural Foundation, for safety and the environment; Jeong Gu-yong, teacher at Gongdeok Elementary School, for education; Lee Sun-rye, block captain in Gongdeok-dong, for filial piety and good deeds; Lim Byeong-hu, member of the GS Apartment senior center, for volunteer service and donations; and Lee Sun-seon, chairwoman of the Seoul Mapo-gu chapter of the Workplace and Factory Saemaul Movement, for regional development.
In his commemorative address, Yoo reflected on the changes Mapo has achieved together with its residents and outlined the district's future direction — including a campaign to plant 5 million trees, expanding one-sport and one-instrument education programs for students, and broadening meal support for senior citizens.
"I am deeply grateful to all residents and to the Citizens' Award recipients who have cherished Mapo and worked hard for the district's development," Yoo said. "I will listen carefully to every resident's voice, no matter how small, reflect it in district administration, and work together with residents to build a better Mapo."
