Mungyeong City in North Gyeongsang Province appointed Japanese apple expert Kuroda Yasumasa as an honorary ambassador at the opening ceremony of the Mungyeong Apple Festival on Saturday.

Kuroda has championed apple-cultivation technology exchanges between South Korea and Japan since 2002, contributing significantly to the development of Mungyeong apples.

Since 2016, he has served as an adviser to the Mungyeong Apple Study Group, helping elevate the fruit's reputation nationwide and boost farm incomes. He has also written on apple-cultivation techniques for Japan's Modern Agriculture journal and served as chairman of the Daikomachi Apple Association.

In recognition of those contributions, he received the 30th Mungyeong Award last year.

"Drawing on the apple-cultivation technology and experience I have built up over the years, I will do my utmost to promote the excellence of Mungyeong apples and help build a better Mungyeong," Kuroda said.

Mungyeong Mayor Kim Hak-hong said it was meaningful to welcome Kuroda as an honorary ambassador. "His borderless passion and expertise rooted in deep knowledge will be a great driving force in leading a better, stronger Mungyeong," Kim said.
