HD Construction Equipment is developing a 3 MW diesel engine for modular data centers, with mass production targeted for 2028.

The company said Thursday it recently held a startup ceremony for the generator engine "DX77" at its Gunsan campus. The DX77 is a diesel engine with a 77-liter displacement and a maximum output of 3 MW.

That capacity is sufficient to meet the average power consumption of roughly 7,000 households, making it the largest model in HD Construction Equipment's engine lineup.

Following the startup ceremony, the company has begun full-scale performance and durability testing, with plans to start mass production in 2028.

The DX77 is particularly well suited for modular data center construction, where prefabricated small-scale modules are assembled on site. Running at 1,800 revolutions per minute, the high-speed engine delivers top-class fuel efficiency and output for its class while requiring a smaller installation footprint.

The engine incorporates high-strength, wear-resistant materials and a high-efficiency cooling system to maintain stable performance during extended high-speed operation. Its filter replacement interval reaches 1,000 hours, reducing maintenance demands. The company also plans to offer the industry's longest service warranty when the product launches.

The DX77 was also designed with fuel flexibility in mind, with the potential to run on alternative fuels such as gas and hydrogen in anticipation of rising power demand from AI data centers.

HD Construction Equipment is also expanding its engine lineup. In addition to the 1 MW DX22 produced at its Incheon factory, the company plans to begin mass production of the 1.5 MW DX37 at a new Gunsan engine factory — set to be completed later this month — in early next year. By 2029, it aims to launch mass production of the 2 MW DX50, completing a 1 to 3 MW range.

"The DX77 is an important product that will take our generator engine business to the next level," President Moon Jae-young said. "We will raise the product's quality through rigorous performance and durability testing and secure new growth drivers in the global power generation market."
