Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Lytic Equity Partners to co-host event
Kim & Chang, Covington & Burling among IP experts taking part
Lytic Equity Partners, an international dispute funding advisory firm, announced Wednesday that it will co-host a forum titled "Global IP Disputes — Winning Strategies for Korean Companies" with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Oct. 26.
The event was organized to help Korean companies respond more effectively to overseas intellectual property disputes, which have grown in importance alongside the global expansion of Korean business. Patent and trade secret disputes in key industries — including semiconductors, batteries, biotech and pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials — directly affect companies' market competitiveness and business performance.
Overseas IP disputes are particularly complex, requiring companies to weigh a range of factors including litigation jurisdiction, governing law, the validity and infringement of rights, the scale of damages, and the enforceability of rulings. In major overseas markets such as the United States, high litigation costs and lengthy dispute proceedings can place a significant burden on companies.
The forum will analyze the global IP dispute landscape and discuss strategies for Korean companies to protect their IP rights abroad and secure favorable outcomes. It will also introduce ways to use third-party funding (TPF) to ease the direct cost burden of litigation and strengthen companies' capacity for strategic responses.
TPF refers to an arrangement in which a third-party funder covers the costs incurred by a party in an international dispute — including legal, expert, and institutional fees — in exchange for a share of any award upon winning. Because the funded party owes nothing if the case is lost, TPF has drawn attention as an alternative for companies facing international disputes worth tens of billions of won.
Lytic Equity Partners, a TPF-focused advisory firm, co-hosted the "2026 Global Trade Dispute Forum" with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in March. In June, it held a separate forum focused on international litigation and accounts receivable recovery for construction companies.
The forum will consist of three presentation sessions and a panel discussion. In the first session, Lee Sang-heon, a patent attorney at Kim & Chang, will present on the global IP dispute landscape and key trends facing Korean companies. Lytic Equity Partners will then introduce how TPF is structured in global IP disputes and share real-world cases, highlighting its potential as a financial strategy in both rights enforcement and dispute defense.
The third session will feature a presentation by Scott, an attorney at Washington-based global law firm Covington & Burling, on the topic "What to Fight, Where to Fight, and How to Win — Strategic Choices That Determine the Outcome of Global IP Disputes." The session will cover key considerations in overseas IP litigation, including the choice of targets, jurisdiction, and response strategy.
The panel discussion will bring together IP practitioners from major Korean companies and legal experts. The session is expected to produce substantive discussion combining legal expertise with firsthand corporate experience.
"Global IP disputes are not simply a matter of winning or losing in court — they are a critical business issue that affects a company's core technology, overseas market competitiveness, and financial performance," said Lee Tae-heon, a foreign-licensed attorney at Lytic Equity Partners. "Companies need to consider a range of strategic options so that litigation costs and risk do not force them to abandon their rights or limit their ability to respond to disputes." He added that TPF allows companies to secure external funding for disputes and share financial risk, making it a highly efficient strategic alternative for responding to global IP disputes.
The forum is aimed at legal, IP, business strategy, and finance professionals at Korean companies. Registration and detailed scheduling information are available through the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry or the Lytic Equity Partners website.
