Eodalldong, one of the East Coast's best-known seafood districts, is expected to become a premier coastal walking destination after Donghae completes a seaside promenade by March 2027.

The area around Eodal Beach draws a steady stream of residents and tourists who come to enjoy its scenic coastline up close. However, the absence of sidewalks along some stretches has long raised safety concerns, forcing pedestrians onto the roadway alongside vehicles.

Donghae plans to build a 318-meter coastal walkway around Eodal Beach, separating pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The city also plans to install facilities that complement the surrounding coastal scenery, creating a pleasant promenade where residents and tourists can safely stroll while taking in sea views.

Before moving forward with the project, the city held a community briefing for local residents at the Eodal Senior Center on Sept. 29, outlining the project's direction and gathering public feedback. The city plans to carefully review the input to improve safety and convenience.

Once complete, the project is expected to improve the pedestrian environment and urban landscape around Eodal Beach while establishing a coastal walking network linking existing tourist attractions — boosting leisure space for residents, drawing more tourists and revitalizing the local commercial district.

A five-to-ten-minute walk from Eodalldong toward downtown brings visitors to Nongoldamgil alley, the Starlight Village Baekgu (109) Steps and the entrance to Dojjaebi Valley Sky Valley. The fresh seafood market at Mukho Port is also reachable on foot in about 10 minutes.

Hong Seong-pyo, head of the city's construction division, said the city would spare no effort to create a safe and comfortable walking space around Eodal Beach so that residents and tourists alike can enjoy the coastal scenery with ease. "We will continue to improve pedestrian safety along the coastal road and develop Donghae's outstanding coastal resources into a world-class walking trail," he said.
