More than 500 experts from 10 countries to discuss waste management technology and policy at 12th i-CIPEC international conference

The National Institute of Environmental Research, under the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, will co-host an international academic conference — the 12th i-CIPEC — with the Korea Energy Climate Environment Council at the Lahan Hotel in Buk-gu, Pohang, from Wednesday through Friday.

The conference will be held under the theme "Sustainable Energy and Environmental Management for Carbon Neutrality, and AI," bringing together more than 500 experts and industry representatives from 10 countries to discuss global trends and future directions in waste-to-energy technology.

On the opening day Wednesday, a preliminary forum will focus on energy recovery technologies for combustible and organic waste, as well as strategies for achieving carbon neutrality.

The main sessions on Thursday and Friday will bring together domestic and international speakers to explore an integrated path forward for the climate, energy and environmental sectors — one that balances waste treatment technology with energy and material recovery from waste resources, while also addressing environmental safety.

Experts from China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand will participate, sharing their countries' waste-to-energy technologies and policy trends alongside South Korea's own research findings and policy experience.

The National Institute of Environmental Research plans to continue related research to compare and review waste-to-energy technology and policy developments in major countries, and to build a scientific basis supporting stable waste treatment and the expansion of energy and resource recovery.

"Addressing the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality requires technological innovation that goes beyond simply disposing of waste — transforming it into high-value energy," said Park Jung-min, head of the institute's Environmental Resources Research Division. "We will do our utmost to strengthen international cooperation through this conference and position South Korea as a leading country in the field of waste-to-energy."
