Gangwon Province's cultural spectrum is remarkably diverse. Chuncheon traces its roots to Neolithic and Bronze Age urban ruins and has long nurtured a culture of youthful memories. Gangneung is known for its distinctive emphasis on the moon. Wonju serves as a hub of the central region, while Donghae is celebrated as the home of the rising sun. Samcheok was once the capital of the ancient Siljik Kingdom and is home to Jukseouru, a national treasure designated the foremost of the Gwandong Eight Scenic Spots. Yeongwol bills itself as a city fit for a king, Jeongseon is the birthplace of Arirang — a UNESCO-listed world heritage tradition — and Cheorwon was the stage for the reign of the warlord king Gung Ye. Goseong, meanwhile, faces North Korea daily and keeps the dream of reunification alive.
The distinctive DNA running through Gangwon's colors, light and spaces will come into full view in Samcheok this week. The 4th Gangwon Artists' Gathering is set to be held Friday through Sunday at the Samcheok Culture and Arts Center and surrounding venues.
The Gangwon Artists' Gathering is held each October during Culture Month, bringing together artists from across the province to share their work and connect with one another. This year marks its fourth edition.
This year's event is themed "Art ON, Samcheok IN" — a play on the Korean phrase for "artistic spirit of Samcheok's people" — and is expected to inject fresh energy into Gangwon's arts scene while raising the profile of Samcheok's cultural appeal.
The program spans performances, exhibitions and literary events. The opening ceremony will include the presentation of the 68th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Culture Award and a celebratory performance. Other highlights include an art, photography and architecture exhibition titled "Colors, Light and Space of Gangwon," a poetry recitation session, and a comprehensive showcase of Gangwon artists.
A range of hands-on programs open to all is also planned, with organizers hoping the festival will draw not only artists but residents and tourists from across the region.
