Donald Trump is considering dismissing Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece, over a series of misconduct allegations, sources said.
The Guardian reported Sunday (local time), citing a senior US official, that Trump is "furious" over the allegations against Guilfoyle. The official said Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio could decide this week how to respond to the matter.
Guilfoyle was engaged to Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., in 2020 before the two split in 2024, making her a former prospective daughter-in-law of the president. Before her relationship with Trump Jr., she was married to California Governor Gavin Newsom, a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination — a political journey that drew wide attention for its sharp ideological arc. After her divorce from Newsom, she hosted a political talk show on Fox News and later met Trump Jr. at a school parents' event. She went on to serve as a fundraiser and political adviser on Trump's 2024 reelection campaign, earning his trust. After returning to the White House, Trump appointed her ambassador to Greece — a move that drew criticism at the time given her lack of any diplomatic experience, with detractors suggesting the appointment owed more to her personal ties to the president than to her qualifications.
Guilfoyle came under scrutiny after reports emerged that she had asked a Trump donor in July last year to cover her credit card bill of $100,000. She allegedly made the request ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing, offering the donor access to administration officials in exchange for the payment.
Further allegations followed: that she had allowed a lobbyist for a Greek construction firm to attend her meetings with governments across the Balkans, and that she had let Greek business tycoons cover the cost of her luxury travel. The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that Guilfoyle boasted at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this year about her close ties to Greek tycoons and said they were footing the bill for her lavish overseas trips.
Rubio initially defended Guilfoyle after the allegations surfaced but has since refrained from making public statements on the matter. According to the Associated Press, both Trump and Rubio are "extremely angry" over her conduct. One official said the State Department's inspector general's office is examining whether Guilfoyle received improper benefits from private business interests.
The Democratic Party has called for Guilfoyle's dismissal. Rep. Gregory Meeks, who leads his party's side on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called for a formal investigation, saying that "if the allegations are true, Ambassador Guilfoyle is unfit to represent the United States."
