Province shares project progress with Ministry of Patriots and Veterans; final site announcement expected in November
South Chungcheong Province and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans met Monday to strengthen cooperation on the long-sought project to establish a national veterans cemetery in the region.
South Chungcheong Province Governor Park Soo-hyun and Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Vice Minister Kang Yun-jin met at the provincial government building to discuss the project's current status and future direction.
South Chungcheong Province is the only provincial-level local government in the country without a national veterans cemetery. Buyeo-gun, Hongseong-gun and Dangjin have each submitted site proposals, and the ministry plans to announce a final decision in November after completing a site evaluation.
The project aims to ease the burden on veterans and their families who must travel long distances for burial services, while strengthening the honors accorded to those eligible for veterans' benefits. It will include burial and memorial facilities.
Vice Minister Kang expressed gratitude for the efforts made by the province and its municipalities. "I am thankful for the attention and effort that South Chungcheong Province and its cities and counties have shown toward this project," she said. "The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans will do its utmost to ensure the review is conducted according to fair standards and transparent procedures."
Governor Park said he was grateful to ministry officials for their work in advancing the project. "Once the final site is confirmed, the province will spare no support or cooperation to ensure the project proceeds without a hitch," he said.
