The North Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly announced Monday that lawmaker Jeong Yong-chae of the Democratic Party of Korea has introduced a bill to partially revise the provincial ordinance on preventing and supporting victims of telecommunications financial fraud.

Jeong drafted the revision in response to increasingly sophisticated telecommunications fraud schemes, including voice phishing and smishing.

The proposed revision includes updates to align the ordinance with amendments to higher-level laws, a new provision requiring the establishment and implementation of a fraud prevention support plan, a legal basis for conducting condition surveys, measures to distribute fraud prevention programs, and provisions connecting victims with legal and psychological counseling services.

The bill cleared the provincial assembly's Planning and Economy Committee on Wednesday and is scheduled for a final vote at a plenary session on Thursday.

"I hope this ordinance revision will help build a practical support system — covering prevention policy, the distribution of protective programs and counseling for victims — so that residents can feel secure in a sound financial environment," Jeong said.
