LG Electronics is stepping up its push into the global software-defined vehicle (SDV) automotive electronics market by supplying a next-generation integrated cockpit solution for Europe's first commercial SDV.

The company announced Tuesday that it will supply the next-generation cockpit solution — which integrates and controls both the instrument cluster and infotainment system in a single unit — for the Renault Group's New Traffic E-Tech Electric. The vehicle, recently named the 2027 World Van of the Year, is Europe's first commercial SDV and is set to roll off the production line at Renault's factory in Sandouville, France, later this year.

A key feature of the vehicle is its centralized SDV architecture, which consolidates what were previously around 80 electronic control units (ECUs) into just two high-performance computers.

LG Electronics' integrated cockpit solution is optimized for this centralized SDV structure by consolidating those roughly 80 ECUs into two high-performance computers. While conventional vehicles rely on dozens of separate ECUs operating independently for functions such as the cockpit, driver assistance and powertrain, SDVs use high-performance computers and centralized software to manage all vehicle functions in an integrated manner.

The solution brings together the instrument cluster — which displays driving information such as speed, RPM and warning lights — and the infotainment system, which handles navigation and media playback. Presenting information from both systems through a unified UX/UI design improves driver visibility and situational awareness.

For automakers, the solution also reduces parts counts and optimizes engineering to lower production costs. Over-the-air (OTA) software update support means AI-powered advanced features can be continuously added or upgraded even after a vehicle leaves the factory.

LG Electronics has built its competitiveness in vehicle instrument clusters and infotainment by drawing on manufacturing capabilities and UX/UI technology accumulated across its TV, home appliance and mobile businesses. The company is now expanding into integrated solutions for the SDV era by combining technologies it had previously developed for individual systems.

A long-standing relationship with Renault Group also paved the way for this supply deal. LG Electronics was named a top supplier by Renault Group three times — in 2014, 2017 and 2020 — and in 2021 the two companies jointly developed an Android-based in-vehicle infotainment system.

LG Electronics plans to establish itself as a trusted supplier in the fast-growing SDV automotive electronics market by expanding collaboration not only with Renault Group but also with major automakers across North America, Asia and other global markets.

"Building on close collaboration with Renault Group and other global automakers, we will continue to advance the core technologies and solutions needed to support the mobility industry's transition to SDVs," said Eun Seok-hyun, president and head of LG Electronics' Vehicle Component Solutions division.
