Yegareum Savings Bank has suffered a hacking attack that exposed customers' personal information, following a similar wave of cyberattacks that hit major commercial banks.

According to Yonhap, Yegareum Savings Bank posted a notice and apology signed by its chief executive on its website Friday, saying an unidentified hacker had accessed a server containing customer data on Wednesday and that personal information had been leaked.

The compromised data includes customers' names, dates of birth and contact details.

The number of affected customers is estimated at around 40,000, though the bank said it is still working to confirm the exact figure.

The bank said it immediately suspended related services and blocked external IP addresses upon discovering the breach, and has since strengthened security monitoring to prevent further damage.

It also reported the incident to authorities within 24 hours of becoming aware of it, and said it plans to operate a dedicated customer service center and send notification messages to affected customers.

The breach follows a series of AI-powered hacking attacks that struck South Korea's five major commercial banks, leaking the data of 25,729 Shinhan Bank customers, 119 from KB Kookmin Bank and 89 from Hana Bank.
