The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced Thursday that it had appointed Ho Jun-seok, a former YTN journalist, as its new spokesperson.

The spokesperson position is an open-recruitment post. The city began accepting applications in August, and Ho was selected through a screening committee that included outside experts, followed by a recommendation from the personnel committee. Ho entered journalism in 1994 as a reporter in YTN's news division and went on to serve as a Cheong Wa Dae correspondent, anchor desk chief, planning and coordination director, and deputy bureau chief of the anchor team. The city said his experience spanning news reporting, broadcast anchoring and newsroom management weighed in his favor.

Ho joined the People Power Party in December 2023, serving as its spokesperson and as the party chapter chair for Seoul's Guro-gap district. He also served as campaign spokesperson for then-People Power Party mayoral candidate Oh Se-hoon during the Seoul mayoral election in June.

"We expect Ho to draw on his extensive media experience to explain the intent and direction of Seoul's policies in terms that resonate with residents, and to convey the city's position on key issues accurately and responsibly," a Seoul city official said. "We also see him playing a role as a channel through which citizens' voices are reflected in city administration."

Former spokesperson Lee Min-kyung has moved to a newly created public affairs adviser post. Lee was appointed in July last year as the Seoul Metropolitan Government's first female spokesperson.
