Process targets subsidiary heads, including Kyongnam Bank president, whose terms expire at year-end
Group pledges equal access to management data for internal and external candidates
BNK Financial Group said Wednesday it has launched CEO succession procedures for seven subsidiaries — including Kyongnam Bank — whose presidents' terms expire at year-end. The move comes as Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin recently raised public concerns about succession practices at financial holding company subsidiaries, adding a new variable to the financial sector's year-end personnel reshuffles.
The group's Subsidiary CEO Candidate Recommendation Committee met Wednesday afternoon to discuss candidate screening procedures and a timeline. The committee plans to provide identical management information to both internal and external candidates to ensure fair competition, with final candidates to be selected in mid-December.
The committee will evaluate candidates' track records, management capabilities, leadership and values through document reviews, reference checks, business plan presentations and in-depth interviews. Based on those assessments, it will identify the most suitable candidates for each subsidiary's specific business environment and characteristics.
A key focus of this round is narrowing the information gap between internal and external candidates.
Candidates will receive in advance three years of management data, key issues and strategic priorities so they can present their business plans with a full understanding of each company's situation. By giving external candidates the same information as insiders, the committee aims to reduce the advantage that familiarity with a company might otherwise confer in the evaluation process.
The committee plans to draw up an initial candidate pool in mid-to-late October, narrow the field in mid-November and select final candidates in mid-December. It will also provide ongoing updates on the progress of the succession process.
"We are focused on objectively verifying each candidate's qualifications and capabilities while creating conditions for fair competition between internal and external candidates," a BNK Financial Group official said. "We will enhance the fairness and transparency of the succession process to appoint outstanding leaders for each subsidiary."
