OpenAI unveils AI agent 'Dots,' launches $500-a-month plan

Built on GPT-6 Astra, Dots can take phone calls and deliver briefings

Rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers

OpenAI has unveiled an AI agent called Dots, designed to carry out tasks on behalf of users.

Alongside the launch, OpenAI introduced a new $500-a-month subscription tier that surpasses its existing top-tier plan, bringing the total number of paid ChatGPT plans to five.

OpenAI officially announced Dots at DevDay 2026, held Tuesday in San Francisco.

Built on GPT-6 Astra, Dots comes with its own cloud computer and browser. Users can assign projects to Dots, monitor progress, and adjust the direction at any time. Through a plugin ecosystem, Dots can connect to more than 4,000 apps, and with user permission, it can also work across other devices such as laptops.

For example, if a user managing a product launch sees the product scope change, Dots will prepare revised drafts of the launch plan and supporting materials and present them for review — with the user making the final call on approval. Users can also interact with Dots via text or voice through ChatGPT on desktop, web, or mobile. They can call Dots directly to give instructions or receive a briefing on completed work.

OpenAI has also given users control over Dots' access permissions and the scope of its actions. Through custom rules, users can allow specific actions, require approval before they are carried out, or block them entirely, and can track progress on an activity screen. Actions that could affect accounts or shared information are subject to automatic review, while sensitive tasks such as changing passwords must be handled by the user directly.

Dots will roll out gradually to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers. Enterprise users can access a beta version once a workspace administrator enables the feature. Subscribers on the $100-a-month ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium plans can use Dots at no additional cost.

OpenAI also added a new $500-a-month tier to its existing lineup. ChatGPT's paid plans now span Go ($8 a month), Plus ($20), and Pro tiers at $100, $200, $300 and $500 a month.

Industry observers expect the restructuring to reflect anticipated growth in AI usage following the Dots launch. In practice, some ChatGPT Pro plans at $200 a month have already seen their usage caps cut from 20 times to 10 times the limit of the Plus plan. As a result, existing $200 Pro subscribers who use ChatGPT near the cap are expected to need to upgrade to the $500 plan.
