Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) again expressed his personal affinity for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un while underscoring that Pyongyang possesses nuclear capabilities.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump was asked why Iran cannot have nuclear weapons while North Korea can. "You know why? Because there was a different president," he said — a clear reference to his predecessor Joe Biden's failure to halt North Korea's nuclear development.

Trump then spoke warmly of the North Korean leader. "Kim Jong-un is my friend. He likes Trump. A lot of people don't," he said. "I'm the only person in the whole world that he likes, and I like him. I get criticized for saying that. People say it's terrible."

Trump said Kim possesses significant nuclear capability. "He has nuclear capability — very substantial nuclear," he said. "Not as much as us, but he has nuclear capability."

"You know why? Because there were presidents who didn't do what I did. There were presidents who weren't Trump, and they couldn't stop it," he said, adding: "As long as I'm here, he will be just fine."
