A man in his 50s has been arrested after allegedly assaulting an acquaintance to death during a drinking session.

The Pyeongchang Police Station in Gangwon Province said Monday it had apprehended the suspect, identified only as A, on charges of assault causing death and was investigating the case.

At around 8 p.m. Monday, police received a 112 emergency call reporting that a person had collapsed outside a bar in Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun.

Officers who examined the victim, identified as B, a man also in his 50s, noticed signs of external injury and suspected foul play. A review of nearby CCTV footage captured A assaulting B.

Police tracked A's movements and arrested him at his home in Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun about two hours after the initial report.

The first person to call emergency services had witnessed the assault but reported only that someone was injured, causing confusion in the early stages of the response.

B was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. The two men were acquaintances and both had been drinking at the time of the incident.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the case and plan to seek an arrest warrant for A.
