Sleep sensor technology unveiled in February now commercialized, expanding BEREX sleep-tech lineup

Coway is introducing a sleep management feature that automatically measures and analyzes sleep data — including heart rate and breathing — when a user lies down on the mattress. The company is applying sleep sensor technology it unveiled earlier this year to its existing mattress lineup, accelerating the expansion of its BEREX sleep-tech business.

Coway announced Monday the launch of three mattress models equipped with the integrated sleep care feature BEREX Sleep Sync. The new products are the BEREX Smart Mattress S8+ Sleep Sync, the BEREX Smart Mattress S6+ Sleep Sync and the BEREX Signature Fireshield Mattress Sleep Sync in the queen size.

Sleep Sync uses a contactless sensor embedded in the mattress to measure a user's sleep state. Users do not need to open a separate app or wear a smartwatch or fitness band. When a user lies down, the sensor detects movement caused by breathing and monitors heart rate to collect sleep data. Results are available daily at 9 a.m. through Coway's IoCare+ app.

The app provides a sleep score, bedtime and wake-up times, total sleep duration and sleep onset latency. Users can also view stage-by-stage sleep patterns — including deep sleep, light sleep, REM sleep and wakefulness — along with average, minimum and maximum heart rate and breathing rate recorded during the night. Data is available in daily, weekly and monthly views.

The feature also classifies users into one of five sleep-habit types based on the previous seven days of data. Coway said it provides type-specific sleep habit management guides developed in consultation with Jung Ki-young, a professor at Seoul National University Hospital.

The launch is part of Coway's broader effort to reposition BEREX from a conventional mattress brand into a sleep-tech brand that leverages sleep data.

The Sleep Sync models are designed with single-user measurement in mind and come in two sizes: queen and Super Single. The smart mattress models feature nine levels of firmness adjustment and a stretching function, while the Signature Fireshield model includes flame-retardant padding.

"We built this product so users can check their sleep data simply by sleeping, with no wearable or manual operation required," a Coway official said. "We plan to continue expanding products and services related to the sleep environment, building on BEREX's sleep-tech capabilities."
