Claude nears 1.5 million monthly users

286,000 new installs; holds No. 2 for 5 consecutive months

Anthropic's generative AI service Claude appears to be cementing its position as the No. 2 app in South Korea's mobile AI market, trailing only the long-dominant ChatGPT in both monthly active users and new installs.

According to Mobile Index, Claude recorded about 1.5 million monthly active users on Android and iOS combined in August, placing second behind ChatGPT's roughly 17.1 million users in the domestic AI app category.

Claude has ranked second in monthly active users for three consecutive months, from June through August. SK Telecom's A. followed with about 1.15 million users, ahead of Perplexity at about 603,000 and Grok at about 546,000.

Claude also ranked second in new installs, logging about 286,000 downloads against ChatGPT's roughly 647,000 — a position it has held for five consecutive months since April. Google Gemini came in third with about 205,000 new installs last month. Grok placed fourth with about 122,000 installs, and AI character chat app Polybuzz ranked fifth with about 68,000.

The data covers usage of AI apps within the productivity category among domestic Android and iOS users last month.
