Budget allocations target safety, education, local economy and lifestyle sports infrastructure — a 4.93% increase over the original budget
Dongjak-gu has finalized a supplementary budget of 48.9 billion won ($35.3 million) to advance the district's policy vision for the ninth elected term and accelerate key projects, the district said. The budget was approved by the district council on Thursday.
With the supplementary budget in place, Dongjak-gu's total budget now stands at 1.04 trillion won, a 4.93% increase over the original figure.
The district allocated funds across safety, education, the local economy and urban competitiveness, with the goal of stabilizing residents' livelihoods and delivering policies they can feel in their daily lives.
Safety was placed at the top of the agenda, with the district focusing on eliminating blind spots in public protection. To preemptively address hazards posed by aging structures, 1.5 billion won was set aside for the demolition of the Sinnorangjin Market building, securing the safety of nearby residents and visitors.
The district also earmarked funds to prepare for the coming winter season. An additional 1.6 billion won was added to the snow-removal budget, covering measures such as renting mobile brine-spraying units to reach hillside areas and narrow alleyways where snow-clearing vehicles cannot operate.
Efforts to enhance the district's urban image are also underway. An additional 400 million won was allocated to redesign the underground passage at Noryangjin Fish Market — the district's most recognizable landmark — transforming the dated, dimly lit corridor into a modern cultural space and improving access to the market.
The district also moved to expand educational infrastructure for young people. Some 29 million won was set aside to establish a college-admissions support center in Sadang-dong, aimed at narrowing the information gap in university entrance preparation and easing the private tutoring costs borne by parents.
Alongside this, 200 million won was added to fund reading and AI-focused programs at schools and community centers, strengthening support for developing future talent.
To inject vitality into the sluggish local economy, the district will put an additional 370 million won into issuing Dongjak Love gift certificates — local currency designed to stimulate consumer spending, support small businesses and ease the financial burden on residents ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
In addition, 400 million won was added to convert unused space at the former Sadang 4-dong community center into a screen park golf facility, giving elderly residents and the broader community easy access to active leisure close to home.
Dongjak-gu District Mayor Ryu Sam-young said the supplementary budget was focused on ensuring that every pressing project needed to protect residents' safety and bring energy to their daily lives was covered. "I am grateful to the council for their support during the deliberation process," he said. "We will move quickly to execute the confirmed budget so that residents can feel the difference in their everyday lives."
