A soldier in his 20s who hurled profanities at a female superior in front of fellow troops was indicted on charges of insulting a superior officer but received a suspended sentence.

Daegu District Court Judge Kim Dong-seok suspended a two-month prison sentence for the soldier, identified only as A, who was charged with insulting a superior officer after swearing at a female superior while other unit members were present.

A was indicted on charges of insulting a superior after shouting at his superior, identified as B — then 33 years old — in the administrative office of a unit in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, in April last year, while fellow soldiers were present. He was accused of yelling, "Just run us through training, you crazy b----" and "Give it a rest. You're out of your mind."

A directed the outburst at B because he was upset over being reprimanded by her, investigators found.

"The offense is not minor, as it undermines order and discipline within the military," the court said, but added that it took into account that A acknowledged the wrongdoing, made efforts toward restitution — including depositing 3 million won ($2,170) for the victim — had no prior criminal record, was in his early 20s, and the circumstances he faced at the time.
