Gangwon Province has set up a pet care network for the chuseok holiday season, partnering with 29 animal hospitals capable of emergency treatment and 98 pet boarding facilities so residents can enjoy the break without worrying about their animals.

The province announced Sunday that it would run a companion-animal campaign through the final day of the chuseok holiday, promoting measures to prevent pets from being lost or abandoned and raising awareness of owner responsibilities and public etiquette around animals.

The campaign, which runs from Monday through Sept. 27, is being carried out by municipal civil servants, honorary animal protection officers and animal welfare assistants at busy locations such as traditional markets and areas near hypermarkets. It is also being promoted online and offline through posters, banners and postings on city and county websites.

Park Yu-jin, head of Gangwon Province's Animal Quarantine Division, said residents spend the chuseok holiday with family, and pets deserve the same care and protection as any family member. "We will continue the companion-animal campaign so that a mature pet culture — one where owners and non-owners show consideration for each other — can take root," Park said.
