Seoul Metropolitan Government targets elementary students in after-school care and education programs

Seasonal fruit served one to four times a week, about 150 grams per serving

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced Sunday that it will provide cup fruit snacks made from domestic seasonal produce to more than 5,000 elementary school students enrolled in after-school care and education programs across the city, as part of its second-semester children's fruit snack support project.

The children's fruit snack support project is a Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs initiative aimed at helping children in their formative years develop healthy eating habits by supplying fresh domestic fruit, while also boosting consumption of locally grown produce. The program ran as a pilot from 2018 to 2022 and was relaunched this year.

During the second semester, students in after-school care and education programs at 75 elementary schools will receive cup fruit snacks one to four times a week, with each serving weighing about 150 grams.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government selected suppliers from among companies certified under the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points food safety management system, following on-site inspections to verify hygiene standards and supply capacity. Seasonal fruits such as shine muscat grapes and pears will be prioritized, with preference given to items certified as eco-friendly agricultural products or carrying the Good Agricultural Practices certification.

Schools may apply for the program at any time. In the first semester, more than 123,218 cup fruit servings were distributed to more than 6,000 students at 84 elementary schools. Schools wishing to participate may contact the Seoul Metropolitan Government's eco-friendly school meals division or their local district office of education.
